With any migration, major change, or even just moving around products it's easy to break product urls.
Shopify does an okay job of catching and setting up redirects automatically but sometimes they miss a few or the moves are complex enough that they get confused.
Here's how you can test if your redirects are working correctly.
- Take an old product url. Say one from Google Search or for a product that you just moved to a new collection.
- Open that old product url in a new browser tab.
- Make sure that the new product page loads.
If step #3 shows a Not Found error then the redirect wasn't created correctly and you'll have to create it by hand. It sucks but it only takes a minute and can save a lot of traffic and SEO rankings.
You can even use a site search in Google to find all of the urls Google knows about and check them to make sure they are still valid. Search for site:YOUR-DOMAIN-NAME
. It's more time-consuming but it can rescue lost traffic.
Most Shopify themes don't quality for Google's Rich Results so they lose out on highly visible SEO enhancements.
JSON-LD for SEO provides high-quality data that will let your store qualify for Rich Results. Often times faster than the industry averages.
